Clinical Support & Specialist Advice
I work with the support of TympaHealth, providing access to advice from ENT-trained audiologists and, when required, ENT surgeon partners for more complex cases. This means if anything unusual or concerning is identified, you can be reassured that additional expert guidance is available.
We begin by going through a short medical questionnaire to ensure ear wax removal is safe and appropriate for you. This includes checking for any previous ear conditions or symptoms that may affect treatment. Consent is discussed and obtained before any procedure begins.
Your ears will be carefully examined using specialist equipment. Digital images may be taken so we can clearly see inside the ear canal and assess whether wax is present. Some patients are surprised to find their symptoms are not caused by wax. If this is the case, I will explain the findings and advise whether further assessment may be helpful.
If wax is present, it is usually removed using gentle microsuction. The most suitable method is always chosen based on your ear examination and safety considerations. Treatment is usually comfortable and often provides immediate symptom relief.
You will be shown before-and-after images if you wish, and provided with advice on maintaining ear health and preventing future wax build-up.
The most commonly used method is microsuction, where a gentle suction device removes wax under direct visual guidance. This is the method most frequently used in clinic. In some situations ear irrigation (a controlled flow of warm water) may be appropriate. Your ears will always be examined first, and the most suitable method will be discussed with you. No treatment is carried out without your consent, and if you have a preference for a particular method, please feel free to let me know.
Ear irrigation is generally very safe. There is a very small risk of eardrum perforation, but this risk is minimised by:
It is strongly advised not to attempt removing wax yourself. The ear canal and eardrum are delicate and can easily be damaged. Cotton buds, and self-cleaning devices often push wax deeper into the ear and increase the risk of injury.
Using olive oil for 3–5 days before your appointment can help soften wax and often makes removal quicker and more comfortable. Hydrogen peroxide-based drops can sometimes be used with caution but should generally not be used for more than 2–3 days, as they can irritate the ear canal.
Softening drops are not always essential, but they often make removal easier and improve comfort during treatment.
Some people naturally produce more wax than others. Common contributing factors include:
Some people find occasional use of olive oil helps keep wax softer and easier for the ear to clear naturally. Avoid inserting anything into the ear canal, including cotton buds, as this often pushes wax deeper.
Most wax can be removed in a single visit, but occasionally very hard or impacted wax may require softening and a follow-up appointment.
